The thought process began with mind maps - one in particular about “remembering.” Key words included: tactile, senses, reflect, everyday, color, circadian, and nostalgia. Many suffering from Alzheimer’s disease may not recognize the simple objects around their home. What if interfaces around the house (buttons, switches, faucets, handles) were no longer indicative of how they operated or their purpose?

This question led to investigation of fundamental human movements, haptic interfaces, and intuitive form for the broader elderly population. This project focuses on the light switch in regards to these principles - how can the routine and ritual of this everyday interaction can be a source of joy?

Design is often intended to create ease and save time. This can be a moment to stimulate, engage, and celebrate the slower processes and movements that come as we age. By doing so, we allow the elderly to be an active educator to younger generations.
